Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

With a motto like “Way Beyond Watching”, you should expect that from the moment you arrive, you will be taking a walk on the wild side of life! Consistently voted as one of the top zoos in North America, the 146 acres of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to over 750 animals and a variety of family-fun attractions! Watch in wonder as animals move freely in mirror images of their natural habitats in the wild. The more time you spend here, the harder it will be to believe that you are still in Colorado Springs!

Family Fun in Colorado Springs

The Zoo is a wonderful place to wander through at your own speed. If you want to just see everything without stopping to enjoy your favorite animals or ride a special attraction, you may only spend a few hours. Yet for those looking for some true family fun in Colorado Springs, consider making a day of your visit to the wild side of The Centennial State! An abundance of exciting exhibits and attractions are just waiting to be explored including:

  • Animal Exhibits – Even though it may be America’s only mountain zoo, the acreage is full of animals from over 170 species. The variety of animal exhibits range from the “Rocky Mountain Wild” where moose, grizzly bears, river otters, and mountain lions roam to the ever popular “Encounter Africa” which houses some of the world’s most endangered species like the African elephants and black rhino. Don’t forget to stop by the “African Rift Valley” to have a chance to hand-feed one of the zoo’s majestic giraffes!
  • Rides and Attractions – There are so many ways to have fun at the Zoo for both the young and young-at-heart. The younger set will love the “My Big Backyard” area, full of hands-on experiences or the historically-restored “Carousel”. Yet the whole family can enjoy soaring over the Zoo in an open-air chairlift on the “Mountaineer Sky Ride”. For those with an interest in a little more history, your Zoo admission includes access to the “Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun”, providing awe-inspiring views of the entire Pikes Peak Region.
  • Water’s Edge: Africa – Opening in Fall 2019, this exhibit will be the new home for the Zoo’s hippos and penguins. With new animal experiences such as waddling among the penguins or walking across a suspension bridge above a yard of hippos, it will be worth the trip alone!
